I grew up in a socio-economically deprived area of inner London which has allowed me to value the importance of hard work. I surrounded myself with like-minded individuals who were determined to succeed in their academic and professional lives, which inspired me to grow passionate about my own career. I wish to inspire this passion in young people, particularly within the study of Mathematics. There is often a misconception that Maths is simply about solving equations – but Mathematics is far more than this. Throughout my career, I have endeavoured to show young people that Mathematics is engaging, innovative and exciting. I have organised a variety of extra-curricular activities such as trips, competitions, and clubs at school, to allow students to see the relevance of Mathematics in the real-world, and to challenge them academically. My passion towards encouraging my students to enjoy Mathematics has subsequently allowed me to develop strong rapport with my students.
In a post-pandemic world, the demands of education on our young people becomes ever more challenging, and often unpredictable. I believe that my experience with tailoring my practice towards all ability levels, equips me with the necessary insight towards helping students of all abilities achieve their best potential, in what is currently unprecedented times for the academic pressures upon our young people.
I currently work as the Head of Mathematics at a London Grammar School. Prior to this, I was the KS5 lead at a highly successful London Academy. I have led numerous successful Oxbridge entrance examination and interview preparations in the fields of Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science and Engineering. Over the years, I have developed a unique and in-depth expertise of the Mathematics Curriculum in the UK, as well as consultation on University entrance.
My own experiences and success in education has motivated me to help others to succeed, achieve and prosper. Having attended a Grammar School, I attained eleven A*s at GCSE, and later, three A*s and two As at A level. I completed my BSc in Economics and my MSc in Political Economy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). I was awarded the Stelios Scholarship in recognition of outstanding academic achievement, awarded to only four LSE undergraduates from the UK. During my time at LSE, I was awarded the Lilian Knowles Prize for best performance in Economic History. After exploring and understanding my own academic potential, I am motivated to help others understand the academic heights they are capable of reaching.
After gaining experience in working in the finance industry, I quickly learnt my passion was elsewhere. I firmly believe I make positive differences to young people’s lives everyday and this does not compare to being another body in the office. As the first generation in my family to attend University, I can relate to the many parents that are going through the UK education system for the first time. I often tell my students, if they bring the motivation, I will bring the knowledge. I want to help those who have a desire to learn and have chosen to start Master Maths to extend my expertise to as many pupils as possible.
Changes to the A level Maths specification in 2017 has created new challenges for schools, students and tutors. The importance of early Maths education is critical to success. I ensure all my pupils receive consistency in mathematical approaches, which can be carried through their GCSEs and A levels. Too widespread is the memorisation of mathematical methods, with little to no conceptual understanding established in the classroom. I am passionate about providing clear and logical explanations that lead to long lasting understanding of mathematical concepts and methodologies. I hold my students to the highest of standards and try to instill the discipline, determination and work ethic they need to achieve.
